Recent interesting projects included the automation of an expanding capstan table (see video below). The main challenge in this project being the continuous monitoring of motor current to provide an instantaneous safety trip in the event of trapped fingers etc. The control involved the design and construction of a custom PCB based around an industry-standard microcomputer complete with USB interface and windows setup software. The latest design is now self-contained allowing setup by a hidden user interface within the table. The table is operated by a keyfob style radio remote control and all wiring is sealed against saltwater damage for use on board yachts.
